Creativity of Language in A. K. Ramanujan’s “Of Mothers, among other things”: A Study in the light of Style
Literature is one of the fine arts at giving rise to aesthetic experience or pleasure. There are two ways of enjoying a piece of literature. One as a layman enjoys and another as a trained man does. A trained needs a theory to make an assessment of literature. Unlike layman’s response, it is accounted for. With the help of a theory a reader can appreciate a piece of literature like a trained scholar. The creative use of language is one the much discussed issues in literature. The language of A.K. Ramanujan’s poetry is highly innovative and creative. He is a master of creative language. He has the capacity to turn language into an artifact. The present paper aims at making an assessment of the creativity of language in A.K. Ramanujan’s poem “Of Mothers, among other things”, in the light of style. This paper focuses on how he employs phonemes, lexical devices, syntactic devices and semantic devices to convey the message in the poem.
