Students should think critically and objectively while clearly conveying complex ideas in a well-structured and concise format. This study aims at enhancing and improving the pre-requisite courses of Technical writing after determining the status of the students’ academic writing skills. The ENGL502 final term group projects were used as the subject of this study. Descriptive method was utilized because the present study’s concerns were the conditions (data handling, language and mechanical skills) that existed. Rubrics were prepared for appointing points. Statistically, the Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was used to determine the difference of the scores gathered from the projects and the mean. Least Significance Difference (LSD) was used to find out which among the results differ from each other where significant differences were noted (multiple differences). Mean was used to determine the academic writing status of the students. In addition, Pearson Correlation Analysis was used to find the relationship between paired language focus forms. The results reveal that most students did not follow the basic process of writing which resulted to incoherent order of ideas in the texts of their projects. On the other hand, it implies that many students have no clear understanding on the concept of referencing: acknowledging the source of ideas used in the texts. As a result, the logical flow of the ideas was moderately achieved. The connections/transitions of ideas (coherence) fairly collaborated from one another because most ideas from other sources were not properly cited. The projects even done collaboratively do not suffice the assumption that it would result an impressive output after the students have taken the pre-requisite courses.
It is recommended therefore that the basic language focus forms be allotted with learning time suited to the level of the needs of the students in studying Basic English courses. In addition, there are language focus forms to be included in the course structure and specifications of Basic English courses. The rudiments of grammar and the discipline of writing are the pedagogic tools of the students to produce an impressive writing output.
