Abstract

This last decade has seen a massive fluctuation in the movie industry, with an increase in demand for horror movies worldwide. Popularity of such movies is decided by the creep factor,Gore and violence. The new trends in the horror genre are based on audiences’ responses, which can be unpredictable at times. However the essence of horror, remains not only in the number of jumps or screams it elicits, but rather on the empathetic value of the movie as well. Writers and producers of this genre have understood the workings of the human mind, which they tap into effortlessly,by playing with our phobias and our innate fears and turn it into a whooping profitable business. What is puzzling is that we pay big bucks for movies that unsettle us. What then is the attraction one may ask,for there are several factors that have to be considered. According to Johnathan Barken “It is in the wealth of emotion and investment that many of us make with these movies. These aren’t just characters on a screen; they’re a representation of the struggle, pain, hardships, and alienation that we often feel”
