The paper focuses on the concept of the family in Indian culture and how this very concept of the family is in the process of transformation in the contemporary time. The paper starts with the traditional concept of the family; that is, what we perceive it to be from the traditional point of view and as it goes on it critically analyzes how it is in the process of degeneration if it is degenerating at all. The paper takes into account the external factors such as postmodernism, consumer culture and investigates how they are playing a vital role in shaping perceptions, values, and beliefs and altering personal identities. It critically analyses how the old generation and new generation are at constant loggerhead through the lens of the two novels- Anjum Hasan’s Neti, Neti and Amit Choudhury’s A New World– that have been chosen for the discussion.
