GODAVARISH MISHRA’S CONTRIBUTION TOWARDS THE DEVELOPMENT OF EDUCATION AND UPLIFTMENT OF SOCIETY THROUGH LITERATURE: A STUDY

ABSTRACT

Pandit Godavarish, a man of outstanding personality was one of the architects of modern Odisha. A man of all-rounder, he contributed a lot to the development of education, literature, freedom struggle, social reform, politics and as well as humanity. For the development of education and literature in Odisha, he had not only written many books but also made strong effort in establishing of educational institutions like Utkal University, S.C.B Medical College, S.C.S College, Puri and many more. Pandit Godavarish dedicated his whole life to serve the Odias and Odisha. As a true nationalist he had exhorted the students through his heart touching and enthusiastic speeches on nationalism. Nationalism was the essence of Godsavarish’s novels. As a social reformer he had tried to eradicate untouchability, abolition of child marriage system, patronage to widow remarriage system, oppose to dowry system etc through his writings. His contributions to agriculture cannot be minimized. He was in favour of abolition of Zamindari system. According to him, the total landed property of the state should go to the ownership of state, so that the national income and national wealth will be enhanced.
