Abstract

Amitav Ghosh is a representative contemporary writer of fiction. He is characteristically a post colonial writer. His works express this vision as he encompasses and engages with the cultural heritage of the world. He has immensely influenced by the political and social milieu of the country, the stories and the events that he heard from his parents during his childhood, made an indelible impression on his mind. His very first fictional work The Circle of Reason (1986), as the name suggests is a book written in defence of reason, logic and rationality. This paper throws light on the beliefs of Indian people. India is place where irrationality is pursued almost like a religion. Superstitions, blind beliefs, prejudices, the dominance of supernatural in the collective psyche hardly allow any fresh thinking.

Keywords- Amitav, post colonial, circle, reason, blind beliefs etc.
