The need of learning English in present day world has got such importance that Communicative Approach is being used to teach it in contexts like Odisha. In spite of the introduction of Communicative Approach, the teachers using this approach are not able to use it to help the students improve their communicative competence in English as expected. Of the many reasons for the teachers not being able to use it, the teachers’ wrong notions of CLT and their lack knowledge on CLT are two important reasons. This article presents the background that led to the introduction of CLT, various definitions on it and the characteristic features of CLT to help the teachers use the Communicative Approach successfully in the class to teach English as a second language.
