Abstract

Our culture and society is extremely dependent upon some form of family organization. Family is the most sensitive unit of the society where all the members are free to share their joys, sorrows and anxieties of life. This is the family which helps the members to interact with the wider social network. For protection, socialization and reproduction, family is important. The relationship between the family members especially the bonding of marriage where both men and women play very pivotal role is mostly studied and remains the focus point in many works of literature.

Shashi Despande is one of the most accomplished contemporary Indian women writers in English. A novelist with a clear perception on the image of women in society is passionate to study human relationships and family. Her novels are the descriptions of the complexities of relationships with in family. The aim of this paper is to study the different relationships in a family and the complexities of man-woman relationship in the context of marriage in Shashi Despandes’s That Long Silence. The marital life of Jaya and Mohan is the focal point of this study. The disturbed relationship and disappointments in their life forced introspection in the protagonist Jaya. She hunts for a balanced and practical approach to maintain her marital relationship.
