Educational research in India is of fairly recent origin. This is not surprising because the study of education as a subject at the university did not begin seriously until the forties. As compared to the sciences and humanities, however education has not formed a significant part of academic life in a university.

Education, in the sense of educational activities in institutions is at the cross roads in India, as such as it is elsewhere. The problem of choice however is more different for a developing society. The decision is not to be taken once and for all, nor it is as simple as the analogy of turning at the cross roads would imply. Education is a subject of study has more of the characteristics of technology than of science, and so it should borrow the concepts, methods and tools of any science, that helps in researching on educational problems.
