Abstract

Curiosity and anxiety always entreat man to move forward, grow and develop into another step of life. This paper is an attempt on analysing how much influence the river, nature’s boon, has on the human life. Nature’s every element is that visible vital energy which has influenced every human in a philosophical and psychological way. The river has been described as that important element, which has a connection with our civilisation, geographical variation, and mythology. Our development has a deep connection with our emotions. The portrayal of the river in Hesse’s Siddhartha and Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness reveals before us the supremacy of nature and its influence on human life. In Siddhartha, the river is that catalyst which made Siddhartha understand his self and helped him to gain enlightenment. In Heart of Darkness, the river unveils the psychological conflicts and the inner realm of mind with its good and evil side.

Key words: Nature, river, inner realm, transformation, enlightenment, psychological conflict.
