Abstract

Girish Karnad is the most significant playwright of Post Independence Literature and his plays have become a byword for imagination and innovation. He uses folktales and myth in his plays to reveal the social reality.

This article is mainly focussed on the contemporaneity of Karnad’s play “Yayati”.  “Yayati” is the first dramatic  venture  by Girish Karnad, written first in Kannad in 1961 and translated by the dramatist himself into English language in 2008.Thus,right from the beginning of his dramatic career Karnad immersed himself in Indian mythology of his motherland and brought to life such mythical characters like Yayati on the stage with an amazing touch of contemporaneity.

Karnad has taken this myth from Mahabharata with a view to expose the absurdity of human life with all its elemental passions and conflicts, man’s eternal struggle to achieve perfection , escapism from responsibilities and self sacrifice, dreams and desire, identity crises and women predicaments. The present research paper is a study of myth in the play “Yayati” and reality of the contemporary society.

Key Words– Myth, reality, feminism, identity crisis, absurdity, selfishness
