Abstract:

Politics forms the central background of Rushdie’s novels. Rushdie’s novel Shame deals with the historical background of Pakistan after independence.  It has presented both the rules– democratic and well as theocratic and both the failed ones.

The political story of Shame revolves around the allegorical characters Iskander Harappa and Raza Hyder. Iakander Harappa is the image of Pakistani democratic ruler Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Raza Hyder is the image of militant ruler Zia Ul Haq. Pakistan finds both the rule as the flop ones as Iskander Harappa is a debauched man, only interested in drinking, gambling and women whereas Raza Hyder is such a tyrant that no entertaining soap operas are broadcasted rather they were replaced with theological sermons. Women were not allowed even to reveal their faces and if they did they were spitted. The innocents and the poor were put to death so the country was growing rich.

Thus even after independence no rescue came for the common man as now they were being dominated by the so called postcolonial-elites of their own nation. Thus the notions of independence remain unfulfilled.
