This paper focuses on the need for exposing students to authentic language materials. Today’s second language instructors face many challenges in terms of making learners speak ‘good’ English. In recent years, one of the teaching materials recommended for teaching and learning second language is ‘authentic materials’. The purpose of using authentic materials is to prepare students to encounter real life English outside of the classroom. To support this idea, this paper cites the views of experts on how beneficial those materials can be when they are used in the classroom. This paper also points out the disadvantages of using authentic materials in L2 learning situations, and suggests the appropriate level at which authentic materials can be used effectively.
