Iodine deficiency is the most common preventable cause of mental retardation in the world today(1). Surveys conducted in 282 districts of India have identified 242 districts as endemic to iodine deficiency(2). The Government of India had initiated a National Iodine Deficiency Disorders Control Program (NIDDCP) for prevention of iodine deficiency disorders (IDD). Under the NIDDCP program, there is a policy of universal salt iodization under which the entire population of the country is to receive iodized salt with a minimum of 15 ppm of iodine.
