Abstract

The two topics of this conference are 21st century postcolonial literature and the searchfor identity. I intend to problematize both topics by asking what is meant by postcolonialism and what sort of identity is it that we are seeking.

Postcolonial literature in its most obvious sense means literature written in former colonies after the departure of the colonizers. In India this means after 1947. Before going on I’d like to ask a couple of questions. First: how many of you were born before 1947? [pause] Second, how many of your parents were born before 1947? [pause]. This clearly is a very postcolonial audience.
