Victimized Benare in Vijay Tendulkar’s Silence! The Court is in Session
Abstract
Benare, the protagonist of the play Silence! The Court is in Session is a well-known character among the portrayals of Indian English Literature. Benare, the victimized reflects free Indian educated woman who lives her independent life. The mock trial, in which Benare is accused as an immoral woman, vividly depicts the condition of women in the post-colonial India. The patriarchal Indian society is explicitly portrayed through the other characters. Even the readers are moved by the accusation made by the witnesses against Benare. Though it is a mock trial, Vijay Tendulkar aptly portrays the subjugation of Indian women.
