Abstract

The paper entitled “A Study on Repression: From Dread of the past into the Living in Alice Sebold’s Novel The Lovely Bone"s” traces the emergence of the psychological novels and marks it significance with an introduction to the novel The Lovely Bones. It also analyses the idea of repression and how these memories are stored up in the deep unconscious mind. The study scrutinizes how the characters in the novel experience them and also disclosesthe impact that these repressed memories has on the lives of the characters in the future. It also sums up the author’s contribution to the novel with her own life’s experiences through an explicit narrative style and diction and highlights the circumstances when these repressed memories are awakened and their consequences. All the characters in the novel are studied to  be prone to these suppressed memories. Finally it spots the light on the last hope the characters seek to escape the painful memories and sums up by promising a cure from the blight of repression.
