Delving Deep into Human Nature: A Study of Select Assamese Short Stories
Abstract
Human nature is at the heart of literature all over the world since time immemorial. The major concern of regional literature is the speculations on the mind of man and on human behaviour. Assamese short stories offer a microscopic glimpse of human nature. Writers like Indira Goswami, Mohim Bora, BhabendraNathSaikia and PurabiBormudoistand as a class by themselves in representing the inner workings of the human mind.
The works of Indira Goswami, Mohim Bora, BhabendraNathSaikia and PurabiBormudoi are vignettes of everyday life in Assam. Their tales feature the predicament of ordinary people. They explore the Assamese lifestyle and give it a literary form. A large segment of readers could identify with their character types as their problems, their futile attempts to solve them.
