Abstract

: Shobhaa De is one of the most remarkable women writers and contemporary Indian English Novelist. Every Indian writer adopts a style to present his/her subject matter, but no one is as remarkable as Shobhaa De who has experimented different styles and techniques, in one novel after the other. She exhibits this to some extent and this is the impact of the western culture on Indian culture, traditions and family relations. Her works have heightened the status of new woman who disregards the age-old tradition of subordination. The present research paper aims to investigate The New Woman’s Quest for Identity and The Pursuit of Happiness in Select Novels of Shobhaa De. De’s women characters are termed as New Women. Through her writings, she has under taken to shatter patriarchal hegemony by drawing attention to women’s exploitation, discrimination and commodification in this Indian male dominated society.
