Portrayal of Psychic Trauma and Challenges in an Ordinary Individual’s Life in Indian Society in Rohinton Mistry’s: A Fine Balance
Rohinton Mistry as a postcolonial diasporic writer born in Bombay 1952, as he belong to parsi religious community in India, he moved Canada in 1975. To overcome stigma of marginality, he has portrait the struggle of Parsi community in all his writings. Parsi community can be called as a minority both in India as well as in the space of international literature.
A Fine Balance â€“ the novel is set in the mid 1970s in India. It tells the story of turbulent times of the country’s partition in 1947 due the state of emergency in 1975. The novel highlights the real history of the nation to the declaration of emergency by Indira Gandhi in 1975. Throughout his work he narrates the nation and about the people suffering from the current political situation in India. The human spirit is crushed during the emergency.
Rohinton Mistry novel captures all the cruel, corruption, dignity and heroism of India. The time was 1975. The place is an unnamed city called Bombay. The government has just declared a state of emergency. It is woven with four protagonist- Dina-a spirited widow, a young native college student called Maneck uprooted from his native place & two tailors Omprakash and Ishvar who came from their village because of caste violence & where forced to share one roof in an apartment due to fate. The characters move from distrust to friendship & from friendship to love for each other to maintain a five balance for the survived in the society during the late 1970. These characters endure poverty, oppression and abuse by those in power and those with power, Mistry evokes the daily heroism of India’s working poor community& the violence between Hindu & Muslims.
