Abstract

Phenomenal woman is a marvellous poem, through which Maya Angelou depictsabout the adversities experienced by certain race and gender. Women are regulated undercertain physical expectations such asbeing cute,fair-skinned, fashionable etc.But being a black woman without havinganyphysical charms, Maya Angelouneitherhates herself nor feelsdisgrace to show off herself. Instead she is very proudto show herself unique in the society. She enjoysand leads herlife in her own way.She wants every woman to follow her heart, to have self-confidence, to believein herinner strength and beauty, to celebrate her individuality. Through this poem Maya Angelou cleverly subverts the notionof femininity and womanhood, to redefine a separate phenomenal identity based on her self-confidence, grace, style and strength.
