Abstract

 To motivate students' interest in learning, a teacher can use various techniques, such as, learning with playing. One form of game that can be used as a learning technique for writing skills by teachers is Crossword Puzzle. As one of the human resources that have a great potential in determining the life of a nation, children need to gain a lot of knowledge through a learning system that can motivate them to learn. One of them is using Crossword Puzzle media in learning writing skills. This is the right step and is well done to improve the acquisition of students’ vocabulary.

 

This research aims to describe the implementation of learning and increase students’ mastery of vocabulary after the application of Crossword Puzzle media in writing skills. This research was conducted on the fifth grade students at SD Negeri 200111 Padangsidimpuan. The subject of this research is the fifth class, while the focus of this research is the use of Crossword Puzzle media to improve writing skills in the fifth class students. The research design used in this study is Classroom Action Research, which is research conducted in the classroom through reflection with the aim of improving the teaching system, so that student learning outcomes increase. The data in this research are in the form of qualitative and quantitative data. Qualitative data is the activity of teachers and students in the learning process of writing skills using Crossword Puzzle media, while the quantitative data is the value of students’ vocabulary mastery after the application of Crossword Puzzle media. The research instruments used were guidelines for observation, interviews, field notes, documentation, and tests to measure the vocabulary mastery of the fifth class students of SD Negeri 200111Padangsidimpuan who had been taught using Crossword Puzzle media. The results of this research indicate that the implementation of learning writing skills by using Crossword Puzzle media can improve vocabulary mastery of the fifth class students in SD Negeri 200111 Padangsidimpuan. This research consists of two cycles. Each cycle consists of two meetings. At the first meeting the researcher trained vocabulary and sentence patterns with the help of power points. At the second meeting the researcher gave a cycle I test. After doing the research using Crossword Puzzle media, it was found that students could more easily improve their writing skills because their vocabulary mastery had increased.
