Washback Effect of the Speaking Module of IELTS Examination In Indian Context

Abstract

The present empirically investigated research article has attempted to provide an understanding of washback effect of a spoken English examination in Indian context. Its primary purpose is to look if washback from a students' perspective exists in the given context. Through a mixed method research approach i.e. a combination both quantitative and qualitative approach, the study has tried to look if and how a speaking module of International English Language Testing System (IELTS) changes learning perception, attitude and behavior of students. Findings of the study reveal the nature of washback effect in the given context. Also, through an understanding of the social factors at play, this study has strived to look at why the washback occurred the way it did. It signals how social context plays a role and are inevitable when exploring washback phenomenon.
