Abstract

Shashi Deshpande holds a unique place among the contemporary women writers in India. The women characters of her novel suffer in silence in a world dominated by men. An attempt has been made to analyze how women were treated in the male dominated society. The paper also highlights how the protagonist Jaya in the novel That Long Silence identifies herself and emerges as a new woman. The protagonist Jaya, who is a writer and remains silent for her husband. This paper mainly focuses on how Jaya breaks her long silence to emerge herself as a new woman. This also vividly presents the plight of women in the male centered world.
