Being the inhabitants of China, the four prominent characters, Suyuan Woo, An-meihsu, Lindojong, Ying-Ying St. Clair, moves to America, where they realize that they have lost their own identity. The paper argues that there is a mix of culture with all the main characters. Tan speaks about the generation change and the struggle to adapt the newly introduced culture.
