The Hyphenated Identity of Women in Indo-American Society: A Select Study of Bharati Mukherjee’s Jasmine and Jhumpa Lahiri’s Mrs. Sen’s

Abstract

The Indian diasporic writers have carved out a unique spot for themselves on the literary spectrum. Bharati Mukherjee and Jhumpa Lahiri hold a prominent position amongst them. They have given voice to marginalised migrated women who are burdened with the load of native culture and traditions. The traditional Indian codes and customs are enforced on them to maintain the cultural purity at home. They are encumbered with the responsibility of maintaining Indianness, whether they so desire or not. The present paper is an attempt to study two similar circumstances presented in Bharati Mukherjee’s Jasmineand Jhumpa Lahiri’s “Mrs. Sen’s” and the character’s response to the stifling circumstances.
