The Indian social system was encountering with numerous problems of which the welfare and development of weaker and depressed masses was the uppermost which gained top most attention of the planners, policy makers, bureaucrats and political executives. The constitution of India was mould in tune with the needs and requirements and aspirations of the people. The out come was designing of various poverty alleviation schemes, programmes and strategies both and national and states level. The present articles gives a bird`s eye view of umpteen programmes meant for protecting the weaker sections in India.
