Abstract

Alice Walker is accepted as one of the energetic voice among the African-American women
writers. She has outputted highly praised body of works including novels, poetry, short story,
essay and criticism. Her works are sounded an insightful and reverting portrayal of black life
as well as the experience of black women and racist society. Walker is the role model of
contemporary writers. She has won lot of awards for her workers, notably the National Book
Award. The lives of the African-American Black women have been affected by sexism,
classism and racism. The Color Purple was published in 1982, which became the work that
propelled Alice Walker into the position of one of the best known contemporary AfricanAmerican writers. It was a success with both critics and the reading public, and it earned
Walker the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1983.
