DISCLOSING WOMEN AS A VICTIM TO CULTURE: A STUDY OF BLACK WOMEN’S WRITINGS
Abstract
AbstractAfrica is made up of many countries. Each of these countries has many ethnic groups with diverse cultural beliefs and practices. Culture is the core of African humanity and holds some of the secrets to life’s purpose; it modulates human behaviour, the ethics of the group, etc. There is no authentic autonomous identity outside of the culture that cradles it. Worst thing about these cultures is that wicked and evil men/women hide under the guise of custom and tradition to oppress the weak. And these cultures are impacted negatively from many sides, and are a complex dilemma. Cultures should cultivate, but not all aspects of culture do this. In these instances cultures, like everything else, can be host to inhumanity and racism. It becomes purveyor of intolerance, cruelty, and stagnation. The present study discloses how women are victimized to culture. It also projects the evil faces of culture and assails the dehumanizing taboos within black community.
