Oral Tradition as Linguistic Medium in Toni Morrison’s Novels

Abstract

In Narratologytime, characterization and focalization are significant constructs to understand the form and functions of a text. A text acquires meaning and existence through the specific use and manipulation of the linguistic medium in which it is formulated. The text also partakes of the linguistic medium in which it is mediated to achieve the desired purpose. The present paper analyses as to how Morrison makes peculiar use of language including symbols, metaphors, motifs and dreams to give meaning to her texts.
