Abstract

Abstract

Racism and sexism have made heavy inroads into the lives of African-Americans, these degradations of which find voice in Alice Walker’s novels. She has brought into the limelight the problems faced by African- American women and has tried to find answers to these burning issues. Black women writers project their vision of the world, society, community, family, relationships and even themselves, through the eyes of Black women characters and poetic personae. What these writers advocate is that every woman should celebrate her womanhood. Every woman should learn to love and appreciate the kind of person that she is. Only then can she enjoy a mutually fulfilling relationship with others. Black women’s literature is a movement into self-love, self-respect and self-determination.
