Abstract

The present research paper reviews the need of Need-based Syllabus of English for undergraduate engineering graduates. A lot of work in the area of language teaching and learning says that one of the major hindrances for the learners to learn a language is the efficacy of the syllabus. Where majority of the language syllabus taught in technical universities in Gujarat focus more on general syllabus rather than a need-based syllabus, the need for the present research comes in context. By a need-based syllabus, we mean a syllabus that suffices the academic linguistic requirements of the learners and will help them in better employability. An attempt of review has been made in the context of current syllabus of English taught to the engineering graduates in Gujarat under one of the largest universities Gujarat Technological University. The paper does not make an attempt to find faults with the current syllabus of GTU. It rather tries to validate its efficacy with theories of need-based language teaching and learning in engineering institutes. The broader aim of this research paper is to help the academicians, course designers, learners and employers at large.
