Incompatibilities of Being British and Muslim in David Edgar’s Play; Testing the Echo
Abstract
AbstractTesting the Echo illustrates the impossible ? mocking the Citizenship Test and poking fun at English customs while making serious points about the difficulties of multicultural living and why people might want to become official British Citizens in the first place. Issues of race and religion are tackled head on. It dramatize the students of ESOL class that struggles with the English language and British cultural values, it seemed highly likely that Testing the Echo was expected to be a good old-fashioned political expose of the treatment of immigrants in the United Kingdom with particular reference to the difficulties that British People have with Muslims and vice versa. Edgar in several scenes depicts that it’s almost impossible to be both truly British and truly Muslim, so the researcher in this article attempts to discuss the contradictions between being British or being Muslim in Edgar’s play.
