Depiction of Female Characters in Carson McCullers’ ‘The Member of the Wedding’

Abstract

Carson McCullers’ sexual ambivalence and her growing identification with masculinity are reflected in her fiction, in which she explored the identity of women in the conservative patriarchal South America. This paper analyzes the portrayal of female characters in Carson McCullers’ novel, The Member of the Wedding. These female characters are a deviation from conventional feminity, which is supposed to be a trap of weakness and submissiveness, both in a grown up and an adolescent character.
