The present article attempts to explore the questions central to a woman’s plight which is undoubtedly the plight of whole society. It endeavours to grapple few unfortunate situations faced by women in India right from the time of birth like preference for a male child, education, upbringing, marriage, a woman’s dignity and so on. The lines from Alfred Tennyson’s poem ?The Princess? very beautifully describes the fate of women as, ?Man for the field and woman for the hearth/Man for the sword and for the needle she/ Man with the head and women with the heart/ Man to command and woman to obey/ All else confusion? (427-31).
