Abstract

Abstract

The present study was conducted to investigate the beliefs and attitudes of 15 English language teachers of Misurata University, regarding the grammar instruction in language classroom. Broadly, the first part of the article presents the current thinking on the importance of teaching grammar in EFL classroom. It also presents different researchers? views on explicit and implicit approaches to grammar teaching. The second part presents an analysis of the responses to the questionnaire, which shows that the respondents believe that grammar is an inseparable part of language learning, as it aids acquiring accuracy and proficiency. The findings show that in classroom instruction they prefer explicit approach, with well contextualized examples, and communicative activities. The study also reveals that large classrooms are a problem in effective teaching of grammar. It concludes that, though, the findings of the study throw significant light on the beliefs of the teachers, the result cannot be generalized because of the small size of the participants in the study.
