Julian of Norwich and Nicholas Ferrar: A Background Study of their presence in T. S. Eliot’s Four Quartets
Abstract
AbstractT.S. Eliot occupies a prominent place in literature for his canonical pieces of work. Most of his works have a larger than life element in it which provide a good opportunity for the interpretation of hidden meanings, metaphors and a search for truth. His works not only carry lessons but also grandiosity, maturity of thought and diction, and a sense of ?talking of the beyond.? One of such works is his ?Four Quartets?, consisting of four poems written over a period of years. All these provide a philosophical, realistic and larger perspective of life in general. However, the lesser known facts about his works are still to be known and discovered. This paper analyses the two important figures namely, Julian of Norwich and Nicholas Ferrar separately and provides a brief background, their history and ultimately about their influence and presence in Eliot’s ?Four Quartets.?
