Abstract

The Indian novel has gradually developed from the tentative themes of freedom struggle to serious issues such as caste system, gender discrimination and religion at a philosophical level. An individual’s social status, responsibilities and their positions are determined by their birth. Earlier gender discrimination was a big issue for women. They were always considered to be low . Ananthamurthy is known as an important representative of the 'Navya' movement in the literature of the Kannada language. As a writer, he is known far beyond this language boundary and is recognized as one of the important writers in India. Ananthamurthy's central themes are the examination of the caste system, religious rules, traditions and the ambivalent relationship between the handed down cultural value system and the new values of a changing world.

U.R.Ananthamurthy’s selected novels presents before us a community of persons who are interlocked with each other through various complex relationships. In his novels, the characters are affected, albeit in non-identical manner, by the traditions of their milieu. This paper discussed in detailed elaborately the  gender  bias in the selected novels of U.R. Ananthamurthy.
